On February 20, 1962, John Glenn became the first American to orbit Earth, aboard the Friendship 7 Mercury capsule. Although Russia’s Yuri Gagarin was the first human to accomplish this feat, Glenn’s flight was three times as long as Gagarin’s single orbit.
